Fidel Castro's eldest son kills himself: reports

The eldest son of the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro killed himself on Thursday night, according to multiple reports.

CubaDebate, a Cuban news website, reports that Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, 68, took his life Thursday morning.

According to the news site, Diaz-Balart had fallen into a "deep depression" and had been seeking medical attention.

“His delicate health situation required hospitalization and then continued with outpatient follow-ups,”  according to another website, CiberCuba

MSNBC confirmed the reports with Cuban government officials. 

Diaz-Balart, also known as "Fidelito," worked as a nuclear physicist after studying in the Soviet Union, and recently served as the vice president of Cuba's Academy of Sciences.  

Known as "Fidelito," he also served as the Scientific Adviser to the State Council. 

His father, Fidel Castro, died last year at age 90.
