Bill Maher scolded liberals on Friday night for bashing President TrumpDonald John TrumpPoll: Both parties need to do more on drug prices Senate approves .3 trillion spending bill, sending to Trump White House: Trump will delay steel tariffs for EU, six countries MORE's decision to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying that former President Obama "proposed the exact same thing."

"All these liberals who are reflexively hating on this, Obama — remember him? — proposed the exact same thing in 2008 and they loved it," the left-leaning HBO host said on "Real Time."

As a candidate, Obama suggested he would be open to talks with countries including North Korea, Iran and Syria in an effort to open up diplomatic channels, a foreign policy position that was widely scorned by conservatives and praised by Obama's supporters.

"I mean what is this bullshit? 'No president has ever done this,' " Maher continued. "Yeah, and they all failed! So I'm going to file this one under, 'So crazy it just might work.' "

Maher went on to criticize Trump's negotiation skills and noted he is among those who "hate Trump so much."

South Korean officials announced in Washington on Friday that Trump had accepted Kim's invitation to meet in person before May. The White House later said that the meeting would not happen without "concrete steps" from the North Korean government.

Trump, long praised for his skills in negotiating business deals, would be the first sitting U.S. president to meet in person with a member of the Kim family, who have ruled the reclusive country for sixty years.

During Trump's year in the Oval Office, North Koreans have conducted multiple missile tests. Trump said he accepted the meeting to work toward denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
