Former first lady Barbara Bush has been hospitalized for a “respiratory related issue,” according to a statement issued Tuesday by the office of former President George H.W. Bush.

Bush, 88, was admitted Monday to Methodist Hospital at Texas Medical Center in Houston, where the Bushes reside.

"She is in great spirits, has already received visits from her husband and family, and is receiving fantastic care," the statement said.

Bush, who was first lady from 1989 to 1993, is the mother of former President George W. Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
