Graham: 'Our last chance to win' in Afghanistan
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said on Sunday that
U.S. and NATO forces are making progress in Afghanistan despite some
areas of significant concern.
“This is our last chance to win,” Graham told CBS’s Face the Nation from Afghanistan.
Graham
said that he backs the idea of setting goals for transition to Afghan
control, but he said that “confusion” surrounding the meaning of a July
2011 date to start withdrawing U.S. troops from Afghanistan has “hurt”
efforts in the country.
"In my view, if people think we're going to leave, we have no chance of
winning," Graham said. "It has hurt. It needs to be clarified. This
confusion has hurt, hurt our friends, and emboldened our enemies."
The Obama administration and military officials have stressed that
any July 2011 withdrawals of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, and the pace
of the withdrawals, will be based on conditions on the ground.
Graham
on Sunday acknowledged that some areas in Afghanistan could be ready
for transition to Afghan control by next July, while others will still
need significant U.S. and NATO involvement.
