The pharmaceutical industry group PhRMA named Business Roundtable President John Castellani as its next president and chief executive.

PhRMA, one of the largest and most influential industry groups in Washington, representing pharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies, announced that Castellani would take charge of the organization at the beginning of September.

Castellani succeeds Billy Tauzin, the former Republican congressman who led PhRMA for five years, during which time he led support by the pharmaceutical lobby for healthcare reform.

“The pharmaceutical industry touches millions of people around the world. The industry’s work saves and extends people’s lives everyday,” Mr. Castellani said in a statement. “As U.S. health care reform is implemented, I look forward to working with the dedicated people of the industry, public officials and other key stakeholders in the health care community to ensure that the benefits of the legislation help the most Americans possible.”
