Lieberman introduces bill to allow D.C. statues in Capitol
Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) plans to introduce a bill that would allow Washington D.C. to place two statues in the Capitol, according to the office of Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.).
“I immediately thought that Senator Lieberman would be an excellent sponsor because of his long history in the Senate of sponsoring bills to recognize our rights and to afford the city full equality,” said Norton in a statement.
“Joe has been my friend since law school and a friend of District residents since he came to Congress.”
Lieberman’s measure is the Senate companion to Norton’s own bill in the lower chamber, which was passed out of the House Administration Committee last week.
Norton’s office said that if the measure is made into law, the likely D.C. statues placed in the Capitol would include Frederick Douglass and Pierre L’Enfant.
Under federal law, every state is allowed two statues in the Capitol. Currently D.C. does not have any.
