Harkin schedules hearings on stem-cell research

Congressional Democrats led by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) have scheduled hearings on stem cell research in response to a ruling Monday that bars the federal government from funding it.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Harkin announced Tuesday that the hearings will be held Sept. 16, when the Senate returns from recess.

"Embryonic stem cell research offers hope to millions of Americans who are suffering from debilitating and life-threatening diseases," he said.

Harkin has called for the ruling's repeal. He is chairman of both the Senate Health Committee and of the Appropriations subcommittee that sponsors stem cell research.
