Powdery substance found in House gallery deemed not hazardous

Parts of the House gallery were reopened Monday afternoon after a white powdery substance discovered on the floor was deemed not harmful.

The Capitol Police had evacuated a few House pages from galleries on the building's third floor — an area normally open to tourists and members of the press — out of what Sgt. Kimberly Schneider called "an abundance of caution."

The unnamed substance tested negative for hazardous materials.
