Obama signs bill to designate 'Mount Stevens' after late Alaska senator

President Obama signed a bill on Monday designating the highest unnamed peak in Alaska "Mount Stevens" after the late Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska).

The White House announced that Obama had signed S. 3802 on Monday, a bill to designate "Mount Stevens" and a nearby "Ted Stevens Icefield" for the veteran senator, who was killed in a plane crash in his native state on Aug. 10.

The legislation was introduced by Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R), an ally of the late, iconic senator.

She's now facing a difficult reelection challenge this fall, and has invoked Stevens's memory in her campaign against Democrat Scott McAdams and Republican Joe Miller. Murkowski's campaign released an ad in support of her write-in candidacy featuring posthumous video of Stevens endorsing her candidacy.
