Obama to make 'Daily Show' appearance
President Obama will make an appearance on Comedy Central's "Daily Show" next week, according to reports.
The president will sit down with host Jon Stewart during a week of tapings for the political satire show in Washington, D.C., preceding the rally next Saturday that Stewart and fellow Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert have planned.
Obama is set to appear on Wednesday, Oct. 27, in what would be his first appearance on the program since becoming president. He sat down for an interview with Stewart shortly before the 2008 elections as well.
The appearance by Obama is part of a sustained effort by Democrats to try to turn young and first-time voters who propelled the party to victory in 2008 to turn out to the polls again in 2010. The president's done this through a series of rallies on college campuses, a town hall broadcast last week on several youth-oriented networks and new-media outreach.
Part of that effort has been appearances on Stewart's show by other administration surrogates. Vice President Biden and Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Tim Kaine have appeared on the show as well.
The timing of Obama's appearance is interesting, considering its coming several days before Stewart's "Rally to Restore Sanity" on the National Mall. The rally is seen as a flashpoint for centrist voters, and Democrats have quietly debated how the rally might affect voters on the following Tuesday, which is Election Day.
