Congressman fires chief of staff after arrest on sex charges

Rep. Steve Rothman (D-N.J.) has fired his chief of staff, effective last Friday, after his arrest on charges of soliciting sex from a minor.

Rothman spokesman Aaron Keyak said that Robert Decheine, the lawmaker's former top aide, was fired immediately after the congressman consulted the House Counsel about his arrest in the Washington suburb of Gaithersburg, Md., last Friday.

"Congressman Rothman considers this alleged criminal act to be shocking, appalling and indefensible," Keyak said in a statement.

Keyak said that Rothman's office is cooperating with investigators and has named legislative director Marc Cevasco as acting chief of staff.
