An aide confirmed the Subcommittee on Intellectual Property, Competition, and the Internet would aim to have weekly hearings on issues involving patent law, copyright, information technology and antitrust law.
When Democrats took control of the committee, they eliminated the IP subcommittee to move its jurisdiction to the full panel.
Smith said decisions regarding subcommittee chairmen would be announced the first week of January.
A number of senior lawmakers are returning to the committee, including outgoing House GOP Conference Chairman Rep. Mike Pence (Ind.) and former Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Ohio). Chabot lost his House seat to Rep. Steve Dreihaus (D-Ohio) in 2008 but defeated Dreihaus on Nov. 2.
Chabot served as the top Republican on a subcommittee panel during his time in the House.
