Baucus to wed former staffer

Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) announced Monday that he is engaged to a former staffer, Melodee Hanes.

According to The Associated Press, the couple got engaged this Christmas while they were in Helena, Mont., and plan to marry this summer.

"I am so happy to share the news that Mel and I are engaged. As we celebrate the new year, we're grateful for the support of our friends and loved ones as we embark on this new journey together. We're looking forward to getting married this summer at home in Montana," Baucus said in a statement.

Baucus came under fire after he nominated Hanes, his former state director who now works for the Justice Department, to be U.S. Attorney for Montana in 2009. Critics called the nomination a conflict of interest, and Hanes eventually withdrew her candidacy for the job.

The couple currently lives together in Washington.
