In new advocacy ad, Bush daughter endorses same-sex marriage
In a new advocacy ad, one of the daughters of former President George W. Bush endorses gay marriage.
“I’m Barbara Bush and I’m a New Yorker for marriage equality. New York is about fairness and equality, and everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love. Join us," the former first daughter says in a Web video by the group Human Rights Campaign (HRC).
Bush's endorsement is in stark contrast to her father's stance on gay rights. While president, Bush pursued a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
The ad is part of the HRC's “New Yorkers for Marriage Equality” campaign, which features videos from New Yorkers who support gay marriage. Bush lives in New York. The ads come as state legislators in Albany debate marriage equality.
Although the younger Bush's support for gay marriage contradicts the stance of her father, George W. Bush’s vice president, Dick Cheney, also supports gay marriage; his daughter, Mary Cheney, is gay. Meghan McCain, the daughter of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), also supports gay marriage, despite her father’s opposition.
HRC President Joe Solmonese said in a press release that Barbara Bush's support shows that gay marriage is not a partisan issue.
Other HRC videos feature a number of famous Americans, including Kevin Bacon, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Kenneth Cole, Fran Drescher, Whoopi Goldberg, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Moby, Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, Julianne Moore, Daphne Rubin-Vega and Kyra Sedgwick.
