

Obama taps new Army chief of staff
President Obama announced on Tuesday that Army Gen. Martin Dempsey is his pick to take over as service chief of staff.
Dempsey currently is U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command chief, a post that has allowed him to put his stamp on all service doctrinal documents, which describe how the Army will carry out specific kinds of missions.
Dempsey has held that post since December 2008, taking over after a brief stint as acting U.S. Central Command chief.
Dempsey also has been a commander in Iraq, a program manager, and special assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, a key post of.
If confirmed by the Senate, he would replace Gen. George Casey, the sitting Army chief of staff.
