Brown sits out Massachusetts delegation's 'It Gets Better' video
Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) sat out on participating in a video featuring the rest of the Massachusetts delegation counseling gay and lesbian youth suffering from bullying.
The entire delegation — which, except for Brown, consists of Democrats — appeared in a video for the "It Gets Better" campaign, a series of videos started by Dan Savage, a gay-rights activist who pens a regular syndicated sex column.
The Massachusetts Democratic Party eagerly seized on his absence and circulated an article to reporters that made note of his lack of participation.
"Scott Brown has a strong record at the state and federal level against bullying and believes that all people regardless of sexual orientation should be treated with dignity and respect," said Brown spokesman Colin Reed. "His main focus right now is on creating jobs and getting our economy back on track.”
Brown's been seen as one of the few Republicans in Congress who is more supportive of LGBT rights, relatively speaking. Most notably, he joined with a number of Democrats to pass a repeal of the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy through the Senate.
The Human Rights Campaign, a leading group that advocates for gay rights, gave him a rating of 33 for the last Congress — not the highest score for a congressional Republican, but one that placed him above most other GOP lawmakers.
