VIDEO: Durbin: Congress's approval ratings probably inflated — only relatives support us
Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) made an appearance on Thursday night's edition of "The Daily Show" and talked about many Americans' simmering discontent with Congress, as well as what lawmakers could do to improve the body.
The Senate majority whip said the Gang of Six, of which he is a member, should have completed its recommendation sooner so they would have been real "players" in the debt-ceiling negotiations.
He told "The Daily Show" he hopes the "supercommittee" will use the framework from the Gang of Six to reach an agreement. He worried that the limited time the supercommittee has to reach a deal will hurt their ability to compromise.
When John Stewart asked how Durbin felt about the public's opinion of Congress, he joked: "They say the approval rating of Congress is between 6 and 19 [percent] — I don't believe we have that many relatives. So, the numbers are inflated."
