The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee said he believes Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi is hiding somewhere in a secure location in Libya.
“I believe that he’s probably in a bunker system or a secure portion of Tripoli,” Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) said Monday on MSNBC.
Libyan rebels stormed Tripoli — the country’s capital — over the weekend and appeared close to finally ousting Gadhafi’s regime after months of fighting. Nevertheless, Gadhafi himself remained at-large.
On Monday, the Pentagon said there was no evidence to suggest Gadhafi had left Tripoli.
Over the weekend, President Obama reiterated his call for Gadhafi to step down from power.
“The surest way for the bloodshed to end is simple: Moammar Gadhafi and his regime need to recognize that their rule has come to an end,” Obama said in a news release. “Gadhafi needs to acknowledge the reality that he no longer controls Libya. He needs to relinquish power once and for all.”
