In her first televised interview, Gloria Cain, the wife of GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain defended her husband against sexual harassment allegations made by former employees.
"I'm thinking he would have to have a split personality to do the things that were said," Gloria Cain said according to media reports in an interview which will air Monday on Fox News's On the Record with Greta Van Susteren.
"You hear the graphic allegations and we know that would have been something that’s totally disrespectful of her as a woman," said Cain. "I know the type of person he is. He totally respects women."
Cain's campaign has been on the defensive since reports broke two weeks ago that the National Restaurant Association had settled claims from two female employees who alleged that Cain had sexually harassed them when he was president of the trade group in the late 1990s.
Since the claims resurfaced, Cain has flatly denied the charges against him and said he would be willing to take a lie detector test to prove his innocence.
His campaign has attacked Sharon Bialek, the first accuser to come forward publicly, questioning her credibility and suggesting she holds a financial motive for accusing Cain.
A CBS News poll released Friday shows Cain still leading the GOP field but tied with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.). The poll found that Cain had dropped in the race since the charges first surfaced and that his support among female voters had weakened. However, 61 percent Republican voters in that poll said the allegations would not affect their vote.
