Cain mum on 'reassessment' in Ohio speech
Cain only vaguely alluded to the brewing controversy surrounding his alleged extramarital affair — and subsequent decision to "reassess" his campaign — in what was billed as a "way forward" speech by campaign manager Mark Block earlier in the day in an interview with ABC.
"They want you to believe that with enough character assassination on me, I will drop out," a defiant Cain said, before telling supporters that "we the people, you and I, are still in charge of this country."
Cain also said that liberals and the political establishment wanted to "shoot me down, tear me down" because of objections to his policy programs.
Cain also repeatedly referred to what he would do in a "Cain administration," seemingly putting to rest questions about whether he was planning to drop out of the race.
"I'm going to be president," Cain declared at one point.
Although nothing is certain as details of the alleged affair continue to emerge, Cain's speech seems to indicate that the candidate believes he will be able to weather the latest scandal by dismissing the accusations as untrue, like he has with charges of sexual harassment.
"There a lot of disinformation on the internet, there's a lot of disinformation on TV, a lot of disinformation in political ads," Cain warned. But he urged supporters to "stay informed."
"Know the facts, because stupid people are ruining America," Cain said. "We have to just outvote them."
Earlier Wednesday, Cain said he has received "a groundswell of positive support,” and argued that his "reassessment" would involve a possible shift in campaign strategy, rather than an exit from the race.
"They’re attacking my character, my reputation and my name in order to try and bring me down, but you see I don’t believe that America is going to let that happen,” Cain said Wednesday morning in Cleveland, according to ABC News.
