Poll: Cain support craters in Iowa
Herman Cain's support in Iowa — the nation's first nominating contest — has cratered to a new low, according to a poll released Friday by the Des Moines Register.
Cain's support — which had stood at a campaign-leading 23 percent in late October — has fallen to just 8 percent of likely caucus-goers, according to the poll, released Friday.
The poll also asked respondents which Republican candidate they believed was most likely to have a scandal if he or she were to win the White House. According to the paper, Cain's numbers rose from 25 percent of respondents at the start of the polling cycle — Sunday — to 47 percent at the end — Wednesday — which covered the period during which an Atlanta businesswoman came forward with allegations of an extramarital affair.
But even if his wife encourages Cain to press on in the race — and even if voters were to accept Cain's denials about the incidents of sexual propriety — voters seem increasingly turned off by Cain's preparation on policy issues.
According to the poll, 27 percent of likely caucus-goers see him as the "least knowledgeable" of the GOP field, most of any candidate. Eleven percent said Cain was their least favorite candidate, up from 3 percent in October.
Cain might also have less of a chance to reset his campaign with Iowa voters. While 22 percent said he was the candidate they would most want to see in person before the latest scandal emerged, that number fell to 8 percent in post-scandal responses.
The Register's findings match Cain's struggles on a national level. A Rasmussen poll released earlier this week found Cain with 8 percent of likely voters, tied for third with Rick Perry and trailing Newt Gingrich by a full 30 percentage points.
