Obama opened his speech at a Bay Area Wal-Mart by saying he needed to head back to Washington because Sunday was Mother's Day.

"That is a public service announcement. Do not forget — it's Mother's Day," Obama said.

"I told Michelle one time, I said, 'How come people put so much emphasis on Mother's Day and Father's Day not so much?' " Obama continued. "She said, 'Every day other than Mother's Day is Father's Day.' "

He added that the first lady's retort "kind of quieted me down."

Last year, the first lady told the "Today Show" about her ideal Mother's Day.

“I mean, like any mother, I get to sleep in, or for me, it's wake up when I feel like it,” the first lady said.

Last Mother's Day, the first lady fit in a workout, time with her mother, Marian Robinson — who lives with the first family — and getting to choose what's for dinner.

“My mom and I pick our meal. So we decide what we want to eat that day. So it's our choice,” the first lady said.
