Romney: Pelosi comments more reason for Gingrich to turn over ethics records
Mitt Romney said Wednesday that Newt Gingrich should release the entirety of his records surrounding the Ethics Committee investigation into the former House Speaker in light of new comments by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who insinuated she might have surprise information unearthed in the investigation.
Pelosi predicted that a Gingrich presidency "isn't going to happen" during an interview Tuesday with CNN's John King, and said she was sure because "there is something I know."
Those comments prompted Romney to again call on Gingrich to release the entirety of the records surrounding his ethics investigation. Gingrich has previously pointed out that the committee's report, which counts hundreds of pages, is all available online.
"We need to understand why that is and those records need to be released because you know that if Nancy Pelosi knows those things right now, she will hand them to Barack Obama's campaign if Speaker Gingrich were our nominee.”
Pelosi's office said Wednesday that she did not intend to imply she had information not available on the record.
"The 'something' Leader Pelosi knows is that Newt Gingrich will not be President of the United States. She made that clear last night," said Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill in an email to reporters.
"Leader Pelosi previously made a reference to the extensive amount of information that is in the public record, including the comprehensive committee report with which the public may not be fully aware."
Gingrich said Wednesday that Pelosi was living in a fantasy world if she believed she had dirt on him.
"She lives in a San Francisco environment of very strange fantasies and very strange understandings of reality," Gingrich said on NBC's "Today Show" Wednesday.
"I have no idea what's in Nancy Pelosi's head," Gingrich added. "If she knows something, I have a simple challenge: Spit it out."
