Pelosi tells Hollywood fundraisers Dems have 'a real chance' to take back House
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told a crowd of top Hollywood fundraisers that Democrats have "a real chance" to retake control of the House in 2012, according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter.
Pelosi met with a group of more than 50 fundraisers and consultants Monday at the house of Haim Saban, the billionaire television producer who leads the ownership group of Spanish-language television network Univision.
"They identified between 50 and 75 seats that are definitely vulnerable," one attendee told the Reporter. "They went through each of the races. It was truly one of the more focused presentations that I've seen."
Pelosi suggested late last year that Democrats could regain the majority by flipping 25 GOP-controlled seats.
“We feel very confident about it. We've outraised the Republicans, if you can imagine that. Our small donors have saved the day for us,” Pelosi said on MSNBC in December.
Vice President Biden echoed the prediction at a retreat of House Democrats in Maryland last week.
"Nancy, I think, is not going to be remembered just for being the first woman Speaker," Biden said, "she's going to remembered for being the second woman Speaker."
The Hollywood Reporter said that guests at the Hollywood presentation included composer Mike Stoller, producer Steve Bing and Jeffrey Katzenberg's political adviser, Andy Spahn. Katzenberg has already helped raise more than half a million dollars for Democratic efforts in 2012, according to President Obama's financial disclosure Tuesday.
Pelosi also apparently addressed the recent failure of online piracy legislation that would have created harsher penalties for online piracy of music, television shows, and movies. The legislation, which Hollywood studios have invested substantial lobbying dollars in backing, failed after a series of online protests turned public opinion against the law. Critics argued that the law might have led to Chinese-style blacklisting of certain websites and punitive punishment for file sharers.
