Lawmakers place their Super Bowl bets

By Meghashyam Mali - 02/05/12 06:40 PM ET

Lawmakers from New York and New England have a lot on the line this Super Bowl Sunday, including cheese cake, clam chowder, beer and bagels.

Democrats and Republicans again crossed party lines to make bets on who will win this year's Super Bowl contest between the New York Giants and New England Patriots.

Everyone in the Senate is a winner with Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen’s (D-N.H.) wager. If Schumer's New York Giants beat the New England Patriots, Shaheen will purchase beer from New York breweries for every senator. Schumer has pledged to supply senators with beer from New Hampshire's Smuttynose Brewery, if Shaheen’s team wins.

New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D) has a bet with Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry (D). Kerry has wagered clam chowder, a New England favorite, from his favorite restaurant Legal Sea Foods. Gillibrand has put up New York cheese cake.

Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown (R) tweeted his wager with former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R): "The bet is on! The Super Bowl wager is that Giuliani will wear a Yankees hat to a Sox game if the Giants lose. Thanks for everyone's input!," tweeted Brown on Friday.

The governors of New York and Massachusetts have also gotten into the act with Gov. Deval Patrick (D-Mass.) and Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) betting their region's favorite foods, all for charity.

Patrick will donate clam chowder from Legal Sea Foods, Centerville pies from The Pie Lady and natural chips from Food Should Taste Good to a New York charity if the Patriots lose. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has pledged to donate Brooklyn cheese cake from Junior's, Greek-style yogurt and Manhattan bagels from Ess-a-Bagel to a charity in Massachusetts.

And not to be outdone, Massaschusetts Rep. Ed Markey (D) cut a bet with New York's Steve Israel (D) with Markey offering up Legal Sea Food clam chowder and Israel offering matzoh ball soup from Pastrami N Friends.

“The Giants will beat the Patriots, and while I won’t make Rep. Markey eat crow, I will enjoy him serving me some soup,” said Rep. Israel.

But Markey is certain his Patriots will come out on top: “The Patriots’s fourth Super Bowl victory in ten years will be all the sweeter with some New York cheesecake on the side,” he said.

The New England Patriots will play the New York Giants in the Super Bowl on Feb. 5.
