Five things you didn't know about the House's new majority leader, who was elected this week to replace Rep. Eric Cantor.

1. Actor Kevin Spacey shadowed McCarthy for his role as House Majority Whip in the Netflix series "House of Cards."

2. When he was 19-years-old, he won $5,000 dollars in a lottery and used it to start a deli. He says that’s how he learned about government regulation, which spurred his interest in politics.

3. He is the first Republican in his family, according to the California lawmaker.

4. Despite being a young and successful Republican businessman, McCarthy says he was rejected for a political internship to Washington, D.C., from a local congressman. 

5. He was elected to California’s 32 state assembly district in 2006 and immediately became the top Republican in the assembly.
