Mitt Romney said Tuesday that Rick Santorum had not yet been "as carefully viewed by the American public" as other candidates, predicting the vetting process would not be kind to the former senator the same day Santorum's campaign was scrambling to defend a new set of controversial comments.
"Sen. Santorum hasn’t been as carefully viewed by the American public as have the others," Romney said while campaigning in Michigan Tuesday, according to ABC News. "We had Donald Trump for awhile and then we had Herman Cain and we had Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich. They have all been vetted pretty carefully. Rick Santorum is now just being seen for the first time in many homes and his background and mine are very different.”
Romney's comments came hours after the Drudge Report splashed a story about a Santorum address in which the former senator warned that "Satan has his sights on the United States of America."
"Satan is attacking the great institutions of America, using those great vices of pride, vanity, and sensuality as the root to attack all of the strong plants that has so deeply rooted in the American tradition," Santorum said during a 2008 speech in Florida.
That report came a day after Santorum spokeswoman Alice Stewart accidentally said President Obama shared "radical Islamic" policies, and within the same week that Santorum himself questioned the president's Christian values and insinuated that certain prenatal tests available under his health care reform package were provided to encourage the abortion of disabled children.
Earlier Tuesday, Santorum defended himself from a statement from the Romney campaign that painted him as a Washington insider.
"It's interesting you hear a lot about who is the insider and who is the outsider in this race," Santorum said in Arizona, according to USA Today. "I think it' sreally facinating that here's a guy who is from outside of Washington who was not a senator or congressman, not because he didn't try or want it he just never got elected."
