Rick Santorum said Friday he regretted endorsing Mitt Romney for president in 2008.
"As far as my endorsement, you know what? Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I supported Mitt Romney when it was down to Romney and McCain," Santorum said on Fox News. "I knew John McCain, I knew what kind of conservative he would be so I landed with Romney. He proved me wrong. He went out right after the campaign was over and he endorsed the Wall Street bailout, he was for big government programs there."
During Wednesday night's presidential debate, Romney reminded the former Pennsylvania senator he endorsed him in 2008.
As the two men bickered during the contentious debate, Romney told Santorum: "Let's not forget that four years ago, well after RomneyCare was put in place, four years ago, you not only endorsed me — you and Laura Ingram — and said and this is the guy who is really conservative and we can trust him."
Santorum's comments come the same day that a pro-Santorum super-PAC released two new ads in Ohio linking Santorum's GOP opponents to President Obama.
Throughout the campaign, Santorum has argued that the Massachusetts healthcare reform law passed while Romney served as governor of the state is too similar to the Obama administration's healthcare reform law and would be a major weakness for Romney in the general election.
