Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) became a dual citizen of the United States and Switzerland this week.
"Congresswoman Bachmann's husband is of Swiss descent, so she has been eligible for dual-citizenship since they got married in 1978," Bachmann spokeswoman Becky Rogness said in a statement. "However, recently some of their children wanted to exercise their eligibility for dual citizenship, so they went through the process as a family."
Bachmann told a Swiss news channel this week that her husband’s parents were raised in Switzerland and that the family has often visited the country.
“It’s tough to find a place not to like in Switzerland,” Bachmann told the Swiss station, and also referenced the “big bag of chocolate” the family typically brings home following visits.
The former GOP presidential candidate is also reportedly eligible to run for office in Switzerland now. But Bachmann, who is running for reelection in the House, laughed when asked by the Swiss news station if she would consider running for office there.
"As you can see there's a lot of competition behind me that I would have to run against, and it would be very stiff because they’re very good," Bachmann said in a video posted Tuesday, indicating the group of politicians behind her.
