Romney reads Drudge, WSJ, but turned off by newsweeklies
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Friday that while he still prefers to get his news from traditional media sources, he's increasingly turning to digital sources like the Drudge Report and newspaper websites.
“You know, increasingly, I’m getting news from electronic sources, whether Newsmax, Drudge, the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal Online, even USA Today online, Fox online, CNN online,” Romney told Newsmax in an interview, excerpts of which were published Friday.
But the Republican hopeful said that while he views “a lot of information online, nonetheless I still appreciate the feel of paper in my hands.”
“I’m afraid Newsweek and Time have fallen off my shelf, they’re not what they used to be in terms of my interest, but I still read The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times in paper version if it’s available,” he said.
The question of how candidates get their news has become a campaign mainstay after former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin famously stumbled when asked what she read to keep up with current events during the 2008 presidential election. Palin was asked repeatedly by CBS News's Katie Couric what specific sources she relied on, and gave only vague answers.
Later, Palin told Fox News she got "a little bit annoyed" by Couric's questioning.
"If you choose to answer a question you are going to get clobbered on the answer. If you choose to try and pivot and go on to another subject that you believe that Americans want to hear about you get clobbered for that too," Palin said.
