Obama campaign plans 'The Wire' fundraiser
President Obama has said repeatedly that "The Wire" — HBO's gritty series about Baltimore, and the influence of the drug trade on nearly every aspect of the city's innerworkings — is his favorite show. At a fundraiser next month, the cast will return the favor, appearing at a fundraising reception to benefit the president.
According to a fundraising flyer discovered by the Sunlight Foundation, the event will occur on Aug. 15 at the Martha's Vineyard home of Judy and Ron Davenport. Tickets will cost between $500 and $2,500 per person. But the flier does not reveal which cast members of "The Wire" will be on hand to help the president's effort.
One actor that could be in attendance: Michael K. Williams, whose character, Omar, the president has cited frequently as his favorite on the show.
News of the fundraiser also drew many on Twitter to suggest Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley should attend. One of the show's central characters — Baltimore Mayor Tommy Carcetti — is said to be based on O'Malley, who is rumored to be considering his own bid for the White House in 2016.
O'Malley has disavowed, however, any connection to Carcetti, saying during his tenure as mayor the city improved from the conditions depicted in the show.
“I would take issue with whether or not I’m the inspiration for The Wire," O'Malley said. "I’m the antidote to The Wire.”
