Michelle Obama cheers on US athletes at London Olympics
The first lady watched American Serena Williams win her first-round tennis match at Wimbledon's Centre Court, reports said.
The tennis star defeated Serbian Jelena Jankovic in straight sets, while Mrs. Obama watched the match from the family box with Williams's mother Oracene Price.
"She's so cool. I've met her several times," said Williams, who last played at Wimbledon earlier this month, winning the grand slam for the fifth time.
The first lady also watched Americans Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps compete in the 400-meter medley. Lochte earned the first American gold medal of the 2012 games, while Phelps, who won 8 gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, finished fourth.
The first lady, who is leading the official U.S. delegation, arrived in London on Friday and said the expected the experience to be "awe-inspiring" and "humbling." She met with American athletes yesterday, before attending the opening ceremonies.
Mrs. Obama has also used her role at the Olympics to tout her "Let's Move" initiative, which seeks to combat childhood obesity.
President Obama, who has remained in Washington this weekend, played basketball at the FBI building, according to pool reports.
White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters Friday that he had heard the president say “I love the Olympics” and that he would be “catching as much of the games as he can.”
GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who had served as the CEO of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics organizing committee was also in attendance at the opening ceremonies. Rafalca, a 15-year old mare, owned by Romney and his wife Ann, will be performing in the dressage competition.
Romney sparked controversy after he made comments suggesting London would not be prepared to properly host the games.
His remarks drew criticism from British Prime Minister David Cameron and London Mayor Boris Johnson and Romney was forced to backpedal his comments on Friday.
“It looks to me like London is ready, and of course it is hard to put on Games in a major metropolitan area,” Romney said in an interview with NBC.
