Mitt Romney said Thursday that his running mate must add "something to the political discourse about the direction of the country," as the presumptive Republican candidate continues to stoke speculation about his vice presidential pick.
"I certainly expect to have a person that has a strength of character, a vision for the country that adds something to the political discourse about the direction of the country. I happen to believe this is a defining election for America, that we're going to be voting for what kind of America we're going to have," Romney told NBC News.
Shortly before the interview aired, Romney emailed supporters with the tantalizing subject line, "My Vice President."
But as with previous teases from the campaign, the email simply asked supporters to donate for the chance to meet with his eventual pick.
"With the convention approaching quickly, the campaign is really picking up speed," Romney wrote. "And when we're moving at this pace, I cherish any opportunity to step back and meet supporters like you."
Speculation has been mounting in recent days that the presumptive GOP nominee is poised to make his selection, with planned appearances in coming days with prospective favorites like Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio).
