Secret Service agent leaves loaded gun in bathroom of Romney's charter plane
A secret service agent accidentally left her loaded handgun in the bathroom of Mitt Romney's charter plane on Wednesday.
A CBS News producer discovered the weapon, the network reported on Wednesday. Romney was flying from Tampa, Fla., where he joined wife Ann Romney for her prime-time address at the Republican National Convention Tuesday night, to Indianapolis for a speech before the American Legion.
The CBS producer informed the Secret Service about the forgotten weapon, which was then retrieved by agents.
“We are aware of the incident,” said Ed Donovan, a spokesman for the Secret Service, in a statement obtained by multiple media outlets. “We take the care and custody of our equipment, especially firearms, very seriously. This matter will be dealt with internally and in an appropriate manner.”
Romney has been under Secret Service protection since February, and his wife, Ann, received a detail last week. Delegates voted to nominate Romney as the Republican presidential candidate on Tuesday.
