Sec. Clinton watched Bill Clinton's 'great' convention speech from East Timor
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, out of the country this week, watched her husband's speech to the Democratic National Convention on a taped delay from southeast Asia on Thursday.
Clinton has been out of the country all week, missing the Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C. It is tradition for the secretary of State to skip political conventions, and she noted earlier this week that it is the first Democratic convention in "many, many years" — in fact, four decades — that she has missed.
Her husband spoke to the convention on Wednesday and officially nominated Obama.
"It's a great honor for him to be nominating the president," Clinton said at a press conference before the speech, according to reports. “Let me also say that my husband read parts of his speech to me over the last several days. I received the ‘as prepared’ version. I am anxious — when I can — to compare it with the ‘as delivered’ version."
Clinton referred to his wife in the speech, joking about the heated Democratic primaries in 2008 when she ran against Obama.
"One of the main reasons we ought to reelect President Obama is that he is still committed to constructive cooperation," Bill Clinton said. "Look at his record. He appointed Republican secretaries of defense, the Army and transportation. He appointed a vice president who ran against him in 2008. Now he, President Obama, appointed several members of his Cabinet, even though they supported Hillary in the primary. Heck, he even appointed Hillary."
Clinton is the first secretary of State to travel to Dili, Timor-Leste, according to the State Department. While there, she met with officials to express support for the young democracy. From there, she is headed to Brunei and then Russia. She spoke with her husband on the plane.
