Democrats, Obama set fundraising record

The Obama campaign and Democratic National Committee combined to raise $181 million in September, setting a new monthly record for the 2012 campaign.

"1,825,813 people came together to raise $181 million for this campaign in September," the campaign announced over Twitter. The campaign first notified supporters of the haul in an email.

That amount marks the largest monthly total so far for the Obama campaign in 2012. Its previous record for the reelection campaign was $114 million raised in August.

The Obama campaign also announced on Twitter it was nearing its 4 millionth donor of the 2012 cycle. As of Saturday morning, the campaign had received contributions from 3,922,420 different people.

However, the president is not the only one showing fundraising prowess, as his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, is reportedly enjoying a fundraising boost of his own following Wednesday's debate.

The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday that Romney's strong debate performance had helped him bring in $12 million in online contributions since Wednesday. 

The Romney campaign and the Republican National Committee, which are also jointly fundraising, have not released September fundraising totals.
