Former
presidential candidate and Sen. George McGovern (D-S.D.) is nearing the end of
his life and has moved into hospice care, according to The Associated
Press.
McGovern ran for president against incumbent President Richard Nixon in 1972, losing every state except Massachusetts and the District of Columbia. He served in the Senate for 18 years representing South Dakota, moving up from the House.
"He's coming to the end of his life," his daughter, Ann McGovern, told the AP.
He
has had previous health issues, including exhaustion, difficulty
speaking and occasionally passing out, according to reports.
McGovern, 90, turned his attention to world hunger following his political career.
His race for president, however, is what he is most remembered for. The break-in at the Democratic National Committee office at the Watergate that led eventually to Nixon’s resignation took place that election cycle.
