Drivers in Reid motorcade cited in car crash that sent majority leader to hospital
A Nevada Highway Patrol report released Thursday night cited two drivers who were part of Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D-Nev.) motorcade as responsible for the highway pileup that sent the Senate's top Democrat to the hospital last week.
The police report, obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, said Michael Percival was responsible for the crash after following behind a vehicle too closely and making an unsafe lane change. Percival is an officer with the U.S. Capitol Police.
Another driver, Cory Mikkelson of Las Vegas, was also cited for following too closely in his vehicle — a pickup truck registered to the Las Vegas Police Department.
According to Reid's office, the senator experienced "rib and hip contusions" but was otherwise unharmed.
"Senator Reid was taken to University Medical Center Hospital by his security detail as a precaution, and walked in on his own. Senator Reid was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident. He experienced rib and hip contusions and has been cleared for release by the doctors," Reid's office said in a statement.
Other members of Reid's staff and security detail reportedly sustained minor injuries.
