Mass. Gov. Patrick staying quiet on Kerry secretary of Defense speculation
Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) is staying quiet on speculation that President Obama could tap Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) as secretary of Defense.
On Monday news broke that Obama was considering nominating Kerry to replace Leon Panetta as secretary of Defense. If Obama did pick Kerry, Patrick would be left with the task of picking a replacement for Kerry's Senate seat to finish the remainder of Kerry's term before a special election in June 2013.
"John Kerry is a fabulous public servant and he would be an outstanding choice to serve in the Obama Administration," Patrick said on Tuesday according to Masslive.com.
"Let's take it one step at a time. He hasn't been appointed or nominated yet," Patrick said with a laugh. "If the president sees fit to nominate him, we'll take it from there."
Kerry has long been rumored to have been hoping to one day become Secretary of State but White House officials have reportedly said that U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice is likely the top candidate for the job. Obama administration officials have also said that Obama administration National Security Adviser John Brennan is a top candidate to become the next CIA director.
