President Obama’s “Runway to Win” collection of clothing and accessories designed by top celebrity-designers helped raise over $40 million for his reelection bid.
The total haul from the sales of designer merchandise was revealed by campaign manager Jim Messina in an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek.
“That ended up bringing in just north of $40 million,” said Messina, touting the decision to sell high-priced Obama-branded items on the campaign website.
Wintour hosted several fundraising dinners for the president and helped pull in fashion industry luminaries, including Vera Wang and Tory Burch, to contribute the work to the campaign shop.
The idea, though, was mocked by the Republican National Committee (RNC) in a web ad during the campaign which sought to paint the president as out-of-touch with the concerns of Americans struggling in the economy.
“Watching the Obama Campaign host a ritzy New York City fashion show while 12 million Americans are out of work? Priceless,” said the ad released in February.
