Vice President Biden took a swim in the frigid waters off Nantucket on Thursday as part of a fundraiser for the island's public library for children.

Biden, who turned 70 on Tuesday, was in Nantucket to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with his family. It is the vice president's 36th Thanksgiving on the island, according to the Boston Herald, and the 11th year for the Cold Turkey Plunge fundraiser.

According to the event's website, hundreds of spectators and swimmers gather on Thanksgiving morning, with participants running to the chilly waters off Children's Beach.

The fundraiser brought in nearly $60,000 for the library.

According to local media reports, the Bidens are spending the vacation at the home of Louis Susman, the American ambassador to the United Kingdom. Susman was a top fundraiser for the Obama campaign.

In 2011, Biden also spent the holiday on Nantucket, attending an annual tree-lighting and caroling celebration.
