NY Gov. Cuomo meeting with Boehner, Reid to discuss hurricane aid
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is visiting leading Democrats and Republicans on Monday to discuss additional relief funding to repair damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.
Cuomo has meetings scheduled with House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to discuss additional hurricane-relief aid.
Cuomo, according to Capital New York, is scheduled to meet with the top Democrat and Republican on the Senate Appropriations Committee, Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) and Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), at 1:45 p.m. At 3 p.m., Cuomo is scheduled to meet with Reid. New York Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both Democrats, will also attend that meeting. At 4 p.m. Cuomo is scheduled to meet with Boehner. New York Reps. Pete King, Michael Grimm and Bob Turner, all Republicans, are scheduled to attend that meeting as well. Finally, Cuomo is set to meet with Pelosi at 4:30.
The New York governor is hoping to secure $42 billion in additional funding to repair destruction caused by Sandy.
Cuomo's trip is reportedly his first to New York since he became governor. In November, Cuomo, who is regularly mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2016, was asked about going to Washington to secure more hurricane-relief aid. Cuomo, speaking to a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, suggested that his visit would spark reports focused on his presidential prospects.
"Laura, if I went to Washington now, what story would you write?" Cuomo said.
