At least three people died and 20 more were wounded Thursday evening when a gunman opened fire at a manufacturing facility in Hesston, Kan.

Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton confirmed that the suspect was an employee at Excel Industries, where the incident took place.

Walton said the suspect was also shot and killed during the incident, according to reports.

Excel Industries makes lawn care products and is located 36 miles north of Wichita.

The local NBC affiliate reported that a manager at Excel Industries evacuated employees upon hearing gunfire erupt.

Sedgwick County Emergency Medical Services sent three ambulances to the scene to assist the injured.  

The Wichita Eagle also reported that nearby Hesston College is on lockdown as a safety precaution following the reported violence.

The shooting was first reported after 5 p.m. local time.

The CBS local affiliate reported that Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents and a medical helicopter landed near the scene of the gunfire.

It also noted that a separate incident was reported in close-by Newton, Kan., but could not confirm a link between the two shootings.

One person was shot in Newton, the station reported, noting witnesses described a suspect driving a gray and red pickup truck.
