O'Malley touts same-sex marriage ahead of rumored 2016 run
Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley is touting his state's same-sex marriage law in a new fundraising email, a sign the Democratic governor could be looking to burnish his progressive credentials ahead of an expected presidential bid.
In the fundraising message, sent through his "O’Say Can You See" political action committee and first reported by NBC News, O'Malley is shown certifying Maryland's election results. The state approved a ballot measure 51-49 percent last month that legalized gay marriage, the first state where voters directly elected to do so.
“This means that Maryland courthouses can now issue licenses to same-sex couples to get married starting in January 2013,” O’Malley writes.
O'Malley's term as governor ends in January 2015, and it has been widely speculated that he will contend for the Democratic presidential nomination.
In an interview with the Washington Blade last month, O'Malley downplayed, but did not rule out, a 2016 bid.
“I’m running mostly to get some more sleep and some more time with my family lately,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to these next two years because with the president’s re-election we’re going to be able to solidify some important strides forward on health care and public safety and moving our state to the other side of this recession. So those are all the things I’m thinking about. I haven’t really given any thought to 2016.”
