Details are slow to emerge, but initial reports say one of the gunmen is dead, and law enforcement agents are pursuing a second gunman.

The FBI, a SWAT team, and state police are coordinating an emergency response from Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton.

President Obama was notified of the shooting at 10:30 this morning by Homeland Security officer John Brennan, and is receiving regular updates, according to White House spokesman Jay Carney.

It’s the latest in a year marked by high-profile shooting deaths.

Earlier this month, Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot his girlfriend at her home before committing suicide in front of two of his coaches in the parking lot at the team’s practice facility.

In July, a gunman killed 12 people and wounded 58 others at "The Dark Knight Rises" premier in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater. A few weeks later, another gunman killed six people and himself at a Sikh temple in Milwaukee, Wis.
