Obama pushes immigration reform with CEOs, labor leaders
President Obama will continue his push for comprehensive immigration reform Tuesday with a series of meetings at the White House, courting both leading progressive and Labor leaders and business executives.
The president will meet with with two waves: in the morning, a wave of allies, including those from civil rights groups and unions, and in the afternoon, business leaders from leading banks and corporations. Notable names include AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka, Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, labor and immigration activist Eliseo Medina, and Yahoo! president Marissa Mayer.
The meetings are part of a coordinated effort by the White House to earn momentum for a comprehensive immigration deal. President Obama outlined the parameters of his preferred approach in a speech last week in Las Vegas; bipartisan groups in the Senate and House are both reportedly circulating around firm legislative language.
Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has been dispatched to the Southwest, where she is holding a series of events to discuss her department's efforts to secure the border. Napolitano will also tour border security operations in Texas and California.
Upon her return on Wednesday, Napolitano and other administration officials plan to meet with law enforcement officials from across the country to discuss the president's proposal. According to Carney, the White House will attempt to "underscore the unprecedented financial and human investment this administration has made in securing our borders and making borders communities safer."
