Senate must save itself by confirming Mike Pompeo MORE (D-N.J.), police sources told the Associated Press.

Menendez, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has long disputed claims that he frequented prostitutes in the Carribean country, saying he has “no idea” who would want to make up such damaging allegations.

A spokesman for the Dominican police department told reporters at a local press conference that officers had determined that attorney Melanio Figueroa paid two women $425 apiece and another about $300 to lie about having sex with Menendez, according to the AP.

Police officials are looking to talk with Figueroa about the payments to the women, the AP reported.

The conservative website The Daily Caller first published the allegations after shooting video interviews with two women who claimed to have had sex with Menendez while in the Dominican Republic.
