Paul Ryan now supports right of same-sex couples to adopt

But the former Republican vice presidential candidate said he still opposes gay marriage.

"Marriage is between a man and a woman," Ryan said. "We just respectfully disagree on the issue."

The Supreme Court earlier this year heard a pair of cases weighing the constitutionality of a federal law barring same-sex couples from receiving spousal benefits and a state law banning same-sex marriage. The Court is expected to issue decisions later this summer, and gay rights activists are hopeful that a favorable ruling could pave the way for gay couples to be allowed to marry in more states.
