The decision by the director, Lois Lerner, came less than a week after she apologized for the IRS applying a higher level of scrutiny to conservative organizations applying for tax exempt status.

"Western New England University has been notified that Lois Lerner, director for the IRS Exempt Organization Division, has chosen to withdraw as guest speaker for the School of Law’s Commencement ceremony this Saturday, May 18," Western New England University vice president for marketing Barbara A. Moffat said according to The Republican of Massachusetts. "In her notification to the University, Ms. Lerner cited her wish to have the ceremony focus on a celebration of the achievements of the graduates."

Lerner graduated from the law school at Western New England University in 1978.

On Wednesday, the acting commissioner of the IRS, Steve Miller, resigned.

President Obama plans to nominate a new acting commissioner to the IRS this week, according to a senior administration official.
