A GOP congresswoman said Sunday that Republicans must heed a new survey that female breadwinners are on the rise in the U.S. households.
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) said that figure should be a "wake-up call for the GOP."
"We need to tune it up. We need to step up to the realities, the changing demographics that are America today."
The Pew Research Center reported this week that four in 10 U.S. families include a woman who is the sole or primary breadwinner.
Ros-Lehtinen said that the GOP can succeed in messaging to small businesses, many of which are owned by women.
Republicans have been debating how best to gain more support from women after the 2012 election saw an 18-point gender gap favoring President Obama.
